Repair or replace a Sub-Zero: how we work it out
Nobody should decide this from a photograph of a bill. We read the cabinet first — what the control has stored, what the gauges say, how the compressor draws at start-up — and then the two numbers sit next to each other and answer for themselves.
A Sub-Zero built-in is not a throwaway appliance and it is not immortal either. Three things move the answer: which circuit has failed, whether the cabinet has already had its sealed system opened once, and what the kitchen around it would cost to disturb. Everything else — age on its own, a noise, a bad week in August — moves it far less than owners expect.
The scenarios below are the ones that actually come up on the west side of Denver and out toward the foothills. Each one starts from a reading rather than a feeling. If the panel is showing you something first, begin at the code and display reference instead.
Sub-Zero Pro Repair Denver — (720) 704-2791. On the road 8:00 am – 8:00 pm, seven days.
Fourteen situations, and where each one lands
- The compressor has failed A dead compressor is a decision, not an automatic write-off. What we measure before either number gets quoted, and where the answer usually lands. (720) 704-2791.
- There is a refrigerant leak in the evaporator Two gauges reading low together is what a leak looks like. Everything cheaper than that gets ruled out first, in the manufacturer's own order. (720) 704-2791.
- This would be the second sealed-system repair Two sealed-system figures against one replacement figure, and a warranty clause that changes the sum. What we read before either is quoted. (720) 704-2791.
- One of the two compressors is gone, the other is fine A combination built-in runs two refrigeration systems. Losing one is not losing the cabinet, and the readings say which side is down. (720) 704-2791.
- The control board and the compressor both need work Two of the larger bands quoted at once is a claim worth re-testing. The terminal readings that decide whether a board is really gone. (720) 704-2791.
- Only the freezer side is failing A warm freezer over a fresh-food side that is holding is the cheap end of this section. The coil temperature sorts the causes. (720) 704-2791.
- The unit is past twenty years old A date is not a diagnosis. We read the service history, the coil and what the control has stored before anyone argues about years. (720) 704-2791.
- It is panel-ready and the cabinetry was built around it The joinery was cut to one machine's published dimensions. What we measure in the opening, and why a panel can make a healthy cabinet run warm. (720) 704-2791.
- The kitchen is being remodelled anyway Nothing about the refrigeration changes because there are joiners in the house. What does change is when the cabinetry bill falls. (720) 704-2791.
- The house is going on the market We have no opinion on what a buyer thinks. We can put the fault, the figure and what the cabinet actually held in writing. (720) 704-2791.
- It is in a foothills or second home The machine is the same one. The house around it is not, and a fault nobody is standing next to is found late. What we measure first. (720) 704-2791.
- It may still be under Sub-Zero warranty Sub-Zero covers everything for two years and five sealed-system parts for twelve. What we read first, and what an independent service changes about the parts route. (720) 704-2791.
- The home-warranty company says replace A settlement offer is built from a symptom. A repair figure is built from a reading. What we measure, what we write down, and how the two compare. (720) 704-2791.
- It warmed up again after the condenser was cleaned A clean that held for a fortnight and then slipped is a reading in itself. What we take next, in the order the manufacturer publishes. (720) 704-2791.
Both numbers
The bands both sides of the decision are measured against
$89 buys a full diagnosis rather than a look, and it is deducted from the price of the repair the moment you give the go-ahead.
Each line is a range because the part decides the number, and the part is not known until the cabinet has been metered. What you get is the exact figure for your repair before anything is opened up — agreed on the day, with the $89 already coming off it once you say go. Nothing is started on an estimate.
- Door seal or gasket renewed
- $270–$680
- Fan motor — evaporator or condenser
- $310–$680
- Defrost circuit: heater, terminator, thermistor
- $280–$690
- Ice module, fill valve or supply line
- $280–$790
- Control board
- $430–$940
- Sealed system, compressor included
- $1,480–$3,420
Worth holding those against the alternative: a comparable built-in replacement, before installation and cabinetry work, $11,970–$20,280. That is why a sealed-system repair on a cabinet with years left in it is usually still the sensible end of the comparison — and why we will say plainly when it is not.
Have it read before you decide
Describe the symptom on the phone and you will usually hear what it probably is before anyone drives out. A $89 service call covers the visit and the full diagnosis in Denver, and comes off the repair once you approve it.
-
Read before quoted
Stored codes first, then air and coil temperatures, then amp draw at start-up, then pressures only if everything in front of them has been ruled out. The readings decide the quote, not the other way round.
-
Refrigeration only
Built-ins, panel-ready columns, undercounter units, ice makers and wine cabinets. No ranges, no dishwashers, no split attention.
-
We will say do not
A sealed-system repair runs $1,480–$3,420. On some cabinets that is money well spent and on some it is not, and you get told which before anything is opened up.

Reachable hours
Technicians are out 8:00 am – 8:00 pm, seven days. Someone picks up at any hour, so a failure overnight does not have to wait for an office to open before it is on the list.
