The compressor has failed

Somebody has told you the compressor is gone, or the cabinet went silent and warm and you drew the obvious conclusion. Before either number is worth arguing about, the thing has to be read. Sub-Zero Pro Repair Denver — (720) 704-2791.

Why the word gets used before it is earned

A compressor is the part everyone reaches for, because it is the part with a name. It is also the last item on the manufacturer’s own troubleshooting list, below the door, the condenser, both fans and the compartment sensor. The service manual says plainly that the sealed system is entered only once the guides above it have failed to explain the symptom.

From the kitchen side a stopped condenser fan and a dead compressor look identical: warm, running, worse by the afternoon. On a meter they separate in ten minutes, and that is the distance between a small band and the largest one.

What opening the system commits you to

Once the sealed system is open the work is not usefully reversible, and it carries its own obligations — the high-side filter-drier is replaced as part of the job, and pressures are read through soldered process valves rather than clamp-on ones, which leak afterwards. We would rather spend twenty minutes proving the compressor is the fault.

What we measure before we answer

  1. 01 Whether the compressor is asked to start at all A control that never calls for cooling, or a relay that never closes, makes a silent compressor that is in perfect health.
  2. 02 Amp draw at start-up A compressor pulling locked-rotor current and dropping out is a different fault from one pulling nothing.
  3. 03 Low-side and high-side pressures, last Sub-Zero's table reads a low pair as a leak, low-and-high as a restriction, high-and-low as an inefficient compressor.
  4. 04 Which of the two systems is affected A combination cabinet runs separate refrigerator and freezer systems. Losing one is a different bill from losing both.

Repair

On most built-ins this stays the cheaper end, as long as the rest of the cabinet is sound and this is the first time the sealed system has been opened.

  • Cabinet, doors, shelving and panels are untouched, and nothing in the kitchen has to be disturbed to do the work.
  • Sub-Zero's sealed-system warranty runs twelve years from original installation, on the compressor, condenser, evaporator, drier and tubing.
  • After the first five years that cover is parts only, and with an independent service the owner obtains those parts from Sub-Zero.
  • A cabinet with one sound system and one failed one keeps the sound one. Replacing it throws away a working circuit too.

Replace

The case for buying gets real when the compressor is not the only thing gone, or when the sealed system was opened once already and did not stay fixed.

  • A board and a compressor together stack two of the larger bands, and the total starts to look like part of a replacement rather than a fraction of one.
  • A second sealed-system failure on the same circuit is the signal to stop. The first repair is ordinary; the second is a pattern.
  • Corrosion or water damage in the machine compartment changes the question, because the next failure is not predictable from this one.

We set the repair figure and the replacement figure side by side with the readings that produced them, and say which we would choose. On a first sealed-system repair to a sound cabinet that is almost always the repair. On a second, it almost never is, and you hear that before anything is ordered.

The two numbers this turns on

Sealed system, compressor included
$1,480–$3,420
Control board
$430–$940
Buying instead: a comparable built-in replacement, before installation and cabinetry work
$11,970–$20,280

$89 buys a full diagnosis rather than a look, and it is deducted from the price of the repair the moment you give the go-ahead. Bands are ranges because the part settles the figure and the part is not known until the cabinet has been read. You get the exact number for your unit before any work starts.

Three follow-ups

How do you know the compressor has actually failed?
By eliminating everything in front of it. The control has to be calling for cooling, the relay has to close, and the start-up current has to be wrong before pressures are read at all. Sub-Zero Pro Repair Denver reaches that conclusion last, not first, on (720) 704-2791.
Is a sealed-system repair worth it on a twelve-year-old cabinet?
Usually, if it is the first one. Age alone moves this less than people expect; what moves it is history. A cabinet whose sealed system has never been opened is a much better bet than a younger one that has. Ask us on (720) 704-2791.
Can you quote the compressor over the phone?
No, and nobody honest can. We can tell you the band it falls in and what we would measure first, then the visit produces the actual figure before any work starts. Call Sub-Zero Pro Repair Denver on (720) 704-2791 to book that reading.

Get the readings before you get a quote

Describe the symptom on the phone and you will usually hear what it probably is before anyone drives out. A $89 service call covers the visit and the full diagnosis in Denver, and comes off the repair once you approve it.

  • Read before quoted

Stored codes first, then air and coil temperatures, then amp draw at start-up, then pressures only if everything in front of them has been ruled out. The readings decide the quote, not the other way round.

  • Refrigeration only

Built-ins, panel-ready columns, undercounter units, ice makers and wine cabinets. No ranges, no dishwashers, no split attention.

  • We will say do not

A sealed-system repair runs $1,480–$3,420. On some cabinets that is money well spent and on some it is not, and you get told which before anything is opened up.

  • Reachable hours

Technicians are out 8:00 am – 8:00 pm, seven days. Someone picks up at any hour, so a failure overnight does not have to wait for an office to open before it is on the list.
