Repair or replace · Denver, CO
It is panel-ready and the cabinetry was built around it
Your own panels are on the doors and the surround was built to fit one machine, so swapping it is never only an appliance decision. We measure the opening as well as the unit. Sub-Zero Pro Repair Denver — (720) 704-2791.

The opening is the constraint, the appliance is not
The joinery in front of you was cut to one machine’s published numbers. Sub-Zero specifies a finished rough opening per model — a width, and a height taken to the finished flooring, with a separate figure where the unit sits flush. Change the machine and you inherit different numbers: either the new unit satisfies the hole, or the hole is rebuilt around it. That second job belongs to a joiner and never appears on an appliance invoice.
The panels have rules, and the machine feels them
Panel work is not decoration as far as the sealed system is concerned. The design guide caps an overlay door panel assembly at fifty pounds, sets a minimum thickness for the assembly, and requires custom panels under a quarter inch to be shimmed up to it. It also warns that a grille panel cut larger than its published size restricts airflow to the compressor area.
That is why a panel-ready cabinet reaches us described as “it has always run warm”. We read the air at the grille first. A cabinet strangled by good carpentry is not a refrigeration fault.
What we measure before we answer
- 01 Air drawn in and pushed out at the grille Sub-Zero warns that a decorative grille panel cut over its published size restricts air to the compressor compartment. Warm air in equals warm air out.
- 02 Condenser condition behind the panel grille Joinery hides a coil nobody has lifted a grille on in years, and dust explains long run times long before the refrigerant does.
- 03 Whether both doors pull up square against their seals A heavy panel and a settled surround drag a door out of line. A door that rests a hair open is a warm cabinet with a healthy compressor.
- 04 Pressures, only once everything outside the cabinet is clear The sealed system is the last thing read, not the first thing blamed, because it is the one answer joinery cannot cause.
Repair
Where the fault is inside the machine and the surround is sound, repairing keeps the joinery closed. Nothing is measured, cut, stained or refitted.
- The unit is serviced in its opening, and the panels, hinges and grille go back on the screws they came off.
- Faults the cabinetry created are corrected at the cabinetry, which sits far below any band on this site.
- A repair leaves the published opening dimensions untouched, and that is the one thing a different model cannot promise.
Replace
Replacing a panel-ready built-in is two jobs on one day: the appliance, and whatever the opening and the panels need afterwards.
- Another model brings its own finished rough opening, measured to the floor covering, and its own panel sizes.
- The figures here cover the appliance alone. Joinery, refinishing and any change to the surround are quoted by the trades that do them.
- Sub-Zero caps an overlay door panel assembly at fifty pounds and sets a minimum thickness for it, so old panels rarely transfer untouched.
We separate the two bills before saying anything: what the machine needs, and what the opening would need. On a sound cabinet the repair wins here more often than anywhere else on this site, because the joinery half of the alternative never shows up in an appliance quote.
The two numbers this turns on
- Sealed system, compressor included
- $1,480–$3,420
- Buying instead: a comparable built-in replacement, before installation and cabinetry work
- $11,970–$20,280
$89 buys a full diagnosis rather than a look, and it is deducted from the price of the repair the moment you give the go-ahead. Bands are ranges because the part settles the figure and the part is not known until the cabinet has been read. You get the exact number for your unit before any work starts.
Three follow-ups
- Will a new Sub-Zero fit the opening I already have?
- Only where its published rough-opening width and height match what your joiner cut, measured to the finished floor. We take those dimensions while we are at the cabinet and tell you what the hole will accept. Sub-Zero Pro Repair Denver, (720) 704-2791.
- Can the existing door panels be reused on another unit?
- Seldom without work. Panel sizes are published model by model, the overlay assembly carries a fifty-pound limit, and thin panels have to be shimmed to the specified thickness. Measure before you order anything, or ask Sub-Zero Pro Repair Denver to do it: (720) 704-2791.
- Can a wooden panel really make the refrigerator run warm?
- Yes. The design guide warns that a grille panel larger than its published size restricts air reaching the compressor compartment, and starved air reads exactly like a failing system does. We measure air before refrigerant, every time: (720) 704-2791.
Where this sits
Get the readings before you get a quote
Describe the symptom on the phone and you will usually hear what it probably is before anyone drives out. A $89 service call covers the visit and the full diagnosis in Denver, and comes off the repair once you approve it.
-
Read before quoted
Stored codes first, then air and coil temperatures, then amp draw at start-up, then pressures only if everything in front of them has been ruled out. The readings decide the quote, not the other way round.
-
Refrigeration only
Built-ins, panel-ready columns, undercounter units, ice makers and wine cabinets. No ranges, no dishwashers, no split attention.
-
We will say do not
A sealed-system repair runs $1,480–$3,420. On some cabinets that is money well spent and on some it is not, and you get told which before anything is opened up.
