Only the freezer side is failing
The freezer has gone soft while the refrigerator sits exactly on its number. Almost every cause of that is a part, not a cabinet, and one reading tells us which part to look at. Sub-Zero Pro Repair Denver — (720) 704-2791.

One figure sorts the whole list
Sub-Zero’s general troubleshooting does not treat a warm freezer as one problem. It reads the evaporator temperature first, then branches. A coil at minus twenty or lower points to a door held ajar, lights burning behind a shut door, an evaporator fan fault, a misread sensor or heavy frost. A coil stopping somewhere between minus nineteen and zero points to warm food loaded in, a hot kitchen, a choked condenser or a leak. A coil that cannot get below freezing points to power at the compressor and then the sealed system.
That is why the thermometer goes on before the quote pad. One warm freezer is four different jobs depending on one reading, and three of them are parts.
Why this one rarely argues for a new cabinet
The refrigerator side doing its job is the strongest evidence on the visit. Everything both circuits depend on has already proved itself, so the possibilities are confined to one side of the machine. Denver adds one wrinkle: the manufacturer states these cabinets work best between 60 and 90°F, and a kitchen running hotter than that in July will push a marginal freezer circuit over before the refrigerator side notices.
What we measure before we answer
- 01 Freezer evaporator temperature Sub-Zero's guide sorts every warm-freezer cause by this single figure, so it is taken before anyone reaches for a price.
- 02 Air movement at the freezer vents with the fan switch made A coil down at minus twenty with a warm compartment means the cold is made and not delivered.
- 03 Resistance of the freezer compartment thermistor at 32°F Sub-Zero publishes 30,000 to 33,000 ohms for that reading. A sensor drifting outside it holds the control in a loop of its own making.
- 04 The refrigerator side, for comparison A fresh-food section sitting on its set point clears everything the two circuits share.
Repair
This is where the section is least dramatic. A freezer-only failure on a combination cabinet is nearly always a parts job.
- A coil at minus twenty with a warm compartment is delivery, not refrigeration: a fan, a switch depressor, a light left burning behind a closed door, or frost across the coil.
- A coil that gets part of the way down points at load, ambient and airflow: the condenser, a door standing open, a hot kitchen.
- Both of those land in the bands printed below, and neither of them argues for spending on a cabinet.
Replace
Only one branch of the manufacturer's own list gets anywhere near a replacement conversation, and it is the last one.
- A freezer coil that cannot get below freezing is where the guide stops offering parts and sends the technician to the compressor and the sealed system.
- Even then the question is one circuit, not the cabinet, because the refrigerator side is demonstrably working.
- A cabinet opened once before for sealed-system work, now losing the freezer circuit, is a different sum entirely.
We take the coil temperature first and let it choose the list. Nearly every route from there ends at a fan, a heater, a terminator, a sensor or a door, all inside the bands below. No replacement figure is printed here, because one failing compartment is not a comparable-cabinet decision.
The two numbers this turns on
- Defrost circuit: heater, terminator, thermistor
- $280–$690
- Fan motor — evaporator or condenser
- $310–$680
$89 buys a full diagnosis rather than a look, and it is deducted from the price of the repair the moment you give the go-ahead. Bands are ranges because the part settles the figure and the part is not known until the cabinet has been read. You get the exact number for your unit before any work starts.
Three follow-ups
- The freezer is soft but the fridge is perfect. Is the whole unit failing?
- No. A combination built-in runs two refrigeration circuits, and a fresh-food side holding its set point proves that everything the two share is well. The fault is inside one circuit only. Sub-Zero Pro Repair Denver can read it — (720) 704-2791.
- There is heavy frost behind the freezer rear panel. Does that matter?
- It matters a great deal. Frost across the coil closes the air path, and the manufacturer treats it as its own branch, leading to the defrost heater, the terminator, the sensor or a door left ajar. Call Sub-Zero Pro Repair Denver on (720) 704-2791.
- Should I turn the freezer colder while I wait?
- Better not to. A colder set point makes a circuit that is already struggling run longer without fixing what is wrong, and it muddies the readings we need. Leave the settings alone and ring Sub-Zero Pro Repair Denver on (720) 704-2791.

Get the readings before you get a quote
Describe the symptom on the phone and you will usually hear what it probably is before anyone drives out. A $89 service call covers the visit and the full diagnosis in Denver, and comes off the repair once you approve it.
-
Read before quoted
Stored codes first, then air and coil temperatures, then amp draw at start-up, then pressures only if everything in front of them has been ruled out. The readings decide the quote, not the other way round.
-
Refrigeration only
Built-ins, panel-ready columns, undercounter units, ice makers and wine cabinets. No ranges, no dishwashers, no split attention.
-
We will say do not
A sealed-system repair runs $1,480–$3,420. On some cabinets that is money well spent and on some it is not, and you get told which before anything is opened up.
