A flashing SERVICE indicator means the control saw a temperature or a run it did not like — not that a named part has failed. Sub-Zero Pro Repair Denver reads what is stored behind it first, on (720) 704-2791.
Built-In panels with a SERVICE indicator, and the current Classic control
Why the word on its own tells you so little
One indicator covers a temperature problem, a run that went too long, an ice-maker
complaint, and a condenser that wants cleaning. The manufacturer’s owner guide lists all
of those under the same lit word, which is why guessing at it is expensive and reading
the stored codes is not.
A second thing catches people out. A cycle of the power key clears the flashing version,
so the complaint disappears and the cause does not. When it returns a fortnight later it
looks like a new fault. It is the same one, one power cycle older.
What we measure
01Whether the word is flashing or sitting steadyTwo different messages share one word. Flashing is a live complaint; steady means codes are stored and were never cleared after a repair.
02Both compartment temperatures against their set pointsNormal readings with the word flashing point at a sensor the panel does not display. Warm readings point at heat, airflow or the door.
03The stored codes in Diagnostic ModeThe word says something happened; the codes say what. Everything after this step follows from them.
04Condenser face and machine-compartment airThe manufacturer's own guide names a dirty condenser as a reason for this indicator, so the coil gets read before the electronics do.
What it usually is
Both temperatures exactly where they should be, and the word flashing anyway
A sensor that has no slot on the display — usually an evaporator thermistor, which no panel prints. The reader sees no change at all, so the lit word is the whole of the evidence.
The word flashing at the end of a hot week, on a cabinet nobody has cleaned behind
Overrun, recorded. Sub-Zero's owner guide sends you to the condenser first here, and a coil that has been breathing through dust since spring is a common answer in this part of Denver.

A steady, unflashing SERVICE on a cabinet running perfectly
Codes left in memory after somebody else's repair. The fault may be gone; the record of it is not, and it clears deliberately rather than by pulling the plug.

Safe to keep running?
If both temperatures are where they belong, yes — this is a warning rather than a failure, and a cabinet can hold a flashing indicator for weeks without losing food. If either compartment is drifting, the clock is real: the control is telling you it has already been compensating for something. Read the codes before anything else happens.
