Two letters where a number belongs mean the panel has stopped trusting one sensor, with SERVICE flashing beside them. Sub-Zero Pro Repair Denver checks the run back to the board before condemning the part at the end of it — (720) 704-2791.
Built-In panels that print two temperatures and carry a SERVICE word
Two letters, one circuit
This is not a numbered code and it is not in the code table. It is what the display puts
in a slot when the sensor feeding that slot is disconnected, shorted, or returning
something the control cannot make sense of. The letters also turn up against the letter
locations in diagnostic mode, where the address gets narrowed further.
What they do not report is cooling. Sub-Zero’s own entries head the symptom “warm or
normal” — the cabinet may be running beautifully while the panel refuses to say so.
What we measure
01Which of the two slots is showing lettersFreezer and refrigerator figures come from separate sensors. The slot names the circuit before any probe is unpacked.
02Continuity from the sensor to its plug on the control boardSub-Zero's instruction is wiring first, component second. A connection put right answers this more often than people expect.
03Sensor resistance held at freezing pointThe manual publishes 30,000 to 33,000 ohms there. Outside that window the part is finished; inside it, the fault sits somewhere in front of the part.
04A thermometer of our own on the shelfSays whether the compartment is actually where the panel has stopped being able to say it is. The two answers lead different ways.
What it usually is
Letters in one slot, a sensible figure in the other, and food perfectly cold
One sensor circuit and nothing more. Both service manuals pair these letters with normal compartment temperatures as readily as with warm ones, so the panel alone settles nothing.
Letters that appear and clear again as the shelves are worked
A joint rather than a component. The published order puts the harness and the plug at the board ahead of the sensor for precisely this behaviour.

Letters beside a compartment that has gone too cold rather than too warm
Also documented. The older guide lists a disconnected or faulty sensor under a cabinet running colder than it should, because a reading the control cannot use keeps cooling called for.

Safe to keep running?
It will keep cooling, provided the compartment behind the letters still measures cold on a thermometer you trust. What the cabinet has lost is a reading, not a system. It has also lost the ability to notice the next fault on that side, so this is worth booking rather than living with. If that compartment is drifting warm too, the visit stops being optional.
