EC 21 records heat where its neighbours record cold

EC 21 is the opposite complaint to the codes either side of it — the defrost put more heat into the freezer coil than the control allows. Sub-Zero Pro Repair Denver starts with where the parts sit — (720) 704-2791.

An empty freezer compartment framed by its grey door gasket, the rear panel carrying two banks of vent louvres above bare shelf ledges

The table puts an under-heat on either side of this code, which makes it easy to read the wrong way round. Nothing here is short of heat.

So the list Sub-Zero prints does not begin at the element. It begins with where the sensor and the heater are seated, moves to the wiring that feeds them, and finishes at the switch that is meant to end the cycle. We take it in that order.

What we measure

  1. 01 Where the evaporator sensor and the heater sit on the coil First check on Sub-Zero's list. A sensor and an element an inch out of place read and warm different pieces of metal.
  2. 02 Which terminal the blue heater lead lands on A pin swapped at the board, or that lead touching another circuit, lets the element heat outside the window meant to stop it.
  3. 03 The switching temperatures of the defrost terminator Rated to open at 55°F and close back at 30°F. Only the 601F-3 carries a 70°F opening figure instead.

What it usually is

Soft packets high in the compartment and a coil with no frost on it at all

Defrost heat that stayed in the box rather than draining away with the melt. The coil looks clean; the food on the upper shelf does not.

Defrost circuit: heater, terminator, thermistor $280–$690

The same overshoot on every defrost, with the coil coming clear each time

A terminator no longer opening where it is rated to. It is a switch, and switches drift; a minute on the meter settles that one.

Defrost circuit: heater, terminator, thermistor $280–$690

A code dating from the week a replacement board went in

A lead put back on the wrong pin. Nothing has failed. The element is simply being fed outside the window the control keeps for it.

No band covers this one — quoted after the diagnosis

Safe to keep running?

Briefly, and watch the food rather than the coil. Heat that should have drained away lands in the compartment instead, so packets on the upper shelf soften while the back wall stays clear of frost. That contradiction is the signal worth acting on.
