EC 08 watches the freezer coil, and defrost depends on it

EC 08 is the sensor on the freezer evaporator — the coil that frosts between defrost cycles. Sub-Zero Pro Repair Denver checks where it is clipped before checking whether it works — (720) 704-2791.

An emptied refrigeration column with its rear evaporator cover dry and frost-free and every shelf removed

Four of Sub-Zero’s twelve numbered codes belong to thermistors, and this is the one on the freezer evaporator — the coil at the back of the compartment that collects frost between defrost cycles. In the location table it reads as FE.

What sets it apart is where it reappears in the manual. The checks for both defrost codes open on the same line: the mounting and location of the freezer evaporator thermistor and the heater next to it. Not the part — the position.

What we measure

  1. 01 Where the thermistor and the defrost heater actually sit Sub-Zero opens two of its defrost-code checks with the mounting and location of this pair. Position is a fault in its own right here.
  2. 02 Connections and continuity through to J1 The first action printed against all four thermistor entries, and the one that decides whether a part needs ordering at all.
  3. 03 Resistance at the sensor, taken at 32°F The window is 30,000 to 33,000 ohms. Outside it the sensor is finished; inside it, the fault lives in the run or in the clip.

What it usually is

EC 08 and one of the defrost entries on the same cabinet

The checks printed for the overheat code and for the under-heat code both start at the mounting and location of this thermistor and the heater beside it. A clip that has worked loose earns whichever code the next cycle produces.

Defrost circuit: heater, terminator, thermistor $280–$690

A sheet of ice across the back wall, with the code in memory

The coil is frosting faster than it is being cleared. Sub-Zero's list for a heavily frosted evaporator runs from the door through the fan, the heater, the terminator and the sense line — long to work without a reading from the coil.

Safe to keep running?

In the short term, yes. The freezer is still steered by its compartment sensor and the panel will go on showing a temperature. Frost is the thing to watch. If the back wall begins to sheet over, or the compartment drifts off its set point, the coil is no longer being cleared and the visit stops being optional.
