EC 40 is a run-time reading, not a verdict on the compressor

EC 40 records that the freezer compressor ran longer than the control expects. It names run time, not a failed part. Sub-Zero Pro Repair Denver reads the condenser and the airflow first — (720) 704-2791.

Built-In 600-3 Series control, read in Diagnostic Mode

A replacement condenser fan motor held at a machine compartment matted with grey lint, two older motors and a cordless drill on the floor

Sub-Zero’s own order for this code is worth knowing before anybody quotes on it. The list starts at the freezer door, moves to the condenser, then both fans, then the compartment sensor. The sealed system is the last item, not the first.

We work it the same way round, because that is where the cheap answers live. A code that mentions the compressor is not the same thing as a compressor that has failed, and in a mile-high summer the difference is usually a coil full of cottonwood.

What we measure

  1. 01 Freezer air against the set point Separates a compartment that is genuinely warm from a control that has only been told it is.
  2. 02 Condenser face and machine-compartment air Heat that cannot leave the coil keeps the compressor going. First reading taken, and often the last one needed.
  3. 03 Amp draw at start-up Says whether the compressor itself is struggling or the relay in front of it is.
  4. 04 Freezer thermistor resistance, against a published 30,000 to 33,000 ohms at 32°F A sensor reading high keeps the control calling for cold that has already arrived.

What it usually is

A machine compartment hot to stand beside, and a coil furred grey

Heat with nowhere to go. Cleaning the condenser is the manufacturer's own early instruction against this code, and after a dry Denver summer it is frequently the whole answer.

Long runs through the afternoon that settle again overnight

A condenser or evaporator fan slowed, fouled, or a blade knocked out of true. Overnight the cabinet catches up; from lunchtime onward it is losing the argument again.

Fan motor — evaporator or condenser $310–$680

EC 07 stored beside it, on a freezer reading colder than its set point

One fault showing twice. Sub-Zero's list for this code opens by sending the technician back to the sensor codes, because a wrong measurement holds a compressor on indefinitely.

Defrost circuit: heater, terminator, thermistor $280–$690

Safe to keep running?

Usually, yes. Most cabinets carrying this code are still holding their food. What is being spent is compressor life: every hour of overrun is an hour the machine was never designed to work. Treat it as a fortnight's notice rather than an emergency.
