The display is dark and the lights still work

Nothing at all. A dark panel is a state Sub-Zero publishes no meaning for, so Sub-Zero Pro Repair Denver treats it as a missing instrument rather than a diagnosis — (720) 704-2791.

Built-In and Classic cabinets with a lit temperature panel

What a dark panel does not settle

It does not mean the cabinet has lost power. Sub-Zero’s owner checklist opens at the supply and the house breaker, and interior lamps that still light answer that before anyone arrives. Nor does it mean the word OFF has been touched into the window; that is a legible state with a key behind it.

What it costs you is the readout. Stored codes sit in the control’s memory behind those keys, so the panel has to answer before the cabinet can be asked anything.

What we measure

  1. 01 A thermometer left standing in each compartment With no readout, this is the only honest account of what the cabinet is holding, and the visit is ordered by it.
  2. 02 Whether any key raises a beep, a chime or a lit segment Separates a panel gone dark from a panel gone deaf. Two different repairs, and the difference shows in the first minute.
  3. 03 Continuity across the ribbon-cable pins at the terminal housing Sub-Zero's own test for a control panel under suspicion. One pin pair that fails ends the test, and no single key is repaired.
  4. 04 Machine-bay air, and whether a compressor is turning at all A dark panel over a running machine is an inconvenience. A dark panel over a silent one is a second fault and it takes precedence.

What it usually is

A dark panel, food still cold, and the compressors cycling to their own schedule

A display fault on top of a working cabinet. It is also a blindfold: Diagnostic Mode is entered from those keys, so nothing stored behind them can be read until the panel answers.

No band covers this one — quoted after the diagnosis

No response to any key, and one pin pair with no continuity behind the housing

The control panel assembly. Sub-Zero's procedure treats a single failed combination as the end of the test and replaces the panel whole, which is why nobody should be quoted for a keypad.

Control board $430–$940

A dark panel on a cabinet that is not running either

A different question, and the order of it matters. A cabinet silent as well as dark may only be part-way through a defrost cycle, and the owner guide asks for thirty minutes before anyone concludes anything.

Safe to keep running?

Yes, for as long as the thermometer agrees. Steady compartments lose nothing by running dark for a few days. What is lost is warning: the panel is how a Sub-Zero raises a problem, and with it out, the first sign of the next one arrives in the food.
